Mixing movement and machine

As a dancer, something that has always interested me is the intersection of dance and technology and Maya Man’s approach to the project really resonates with me. Her collaborator Bill’s central question was not “What are all the things it can do?” but instead it was “What do I want from it?” And I think that this is an important framework to keep in mind when it comes to creating with new technologies. Creating using technology to make something human is far more impactful than creating for technology’s sake.

Humans of AI

It is striking how much unattributed human labor goes behind machine learning, particularly datasets like COCO. From the photographers to Amazon mechanical turks, Schmitt highlights the behind the work of thousands of people that went behind creating AI models. The Slideshow also brings back the humanity to training data, which interestingly didn’t require much but a different pacing and framing. When we view these pictures as a dataset, the humanity within them is lost, but when we view it slowly one by one, we are really able to see the humans behind the labeled objects in AI models. I wonder how AI’s reliance on curated datasets might shape our own perceptions of the world, especially as it continues to enter aspects of our daily lives.

I'd like to know more about how to measure bias within these models, and what steps can be taken to mitigate it in future versions. In terms of what to include in the biographies, I think it would be helpful to add clearer indications of the models’ known limitations and potential biases upfront, especially in relation to race, gender, or other demographic factors.

I think that these ethical considerations are important to understand, especially being more conscious of unavoidable biases baked into the tools that I am using.

P5 sketch

I started with the bodypose sketch and I made a circle size track the wrists and the color of the circle change based on the position of my nose. What’s interesting is that even if my wrists are not on screen, the circle is still drawn. How do I prevent this from happening?
